Toni says: there are some sobering statistics here and an eye opening perspective. I’m interested in what this situation says about equality in the criminal system. Is this an area where we are still in the past? Where women were punished in asylums for getting pregnant out of wedlock? Where women weren’t allowed to inherit? Where women could be beaten by their husbands but sent away for having wilful thoughts? Have things changed that much? With over 80% of women in prison having committed non violent crimes, is there something we are missing?
